Dark Spots: Caused by Not Just UV Rays?! Special Measures Against Rebound Pigmentation for Autumn/Winter Runs

Dark Spots: Caused by Not Just UV Rays?! Special Measures Against Rebound Pigmentation for Autumn/Winter Runs

The weather is gradually getting cooler, and we can finally enjoy an ideal running season. However, if you think you can start skipping your skin brightening care as the sun is less aggressive in autumn, you’re making a huge mistake! In fact, autumn and winter is the time when dark spots may come back exactly because of your negligence. Shiseido researcher, Ms. Senko Negishi has just published her new findings on this phenomenon of “rebound pigmentation,” and today she explains about its causes and countermeasures to be taken in the coming season.

Brightening care in spring and summer could be wasted?! About “rebound pigmentation”

Brightening care in spring and summer could be wasted?! About “rebound pigmentation”
Rebound pigmentation refers to a relapse in melanin production inside the skin. The generation of melanin is suppressed with continuous brightening care in spring and summer but may rebound when the regimen is discontinued in autumn and winter.

Moreover, there is one more factor in the running environment in colder seasons that may even aggravate dark spots – skin dryness. In autumn and winter, our skin is exposed to the dry outer air, and skin dryness becomes one of the key concerns of the season. Shiseido has looked into the reasons why dark spots get more evident in autumn and winter and found that it’s not only due to UV exposure; irritation caused by dryness is another aggravating factor that increases dark spots.

Even with the sun getting weaker, skin brightening care should be ongoing, or you risk seeing your spots back! We have asked Ms. Negishi for concrete measures to be taken in autumn and winter in order to prevent rebound pigmentation. Use them also when you go running to keep your skin healthy and beautiful in any season!

1) Make moisturizing a habit, both from inside and outside!

In autumn and winter, as both air temperature and humidity drop, your skin gets drier and drier. In order to prevent the aggravation of dark spots due to dryness, make sure to moisturize your skin properly before you go for a run. Apply a moisturizing lotion and emulsion before you head out, and add a sheet mask soaked in lotion and a cream to your night regimen after a run, in order to protect your skin from the dryness of autumn and winter air. And of course, remember to drink water at short intervals to prevent dryness from within.

2) Sun care is a must not only while running, but any time you go out

Don’t be fooled into thinking that UV rays are harmless as soon as summer is gone! From autumn to winter, the sun is lower in the horizon, meaning it shines right all over your face. Therefore, skipping sun care just because the light is weaker is a no-no. When you run outside, apply sunscreen properly at all times.

3) Continue, not quit brightening care in autumn and winter!

Many people tend to stop skin brightening in autumn and winter because they get concerned with skin dryness around this time of the year, and brightening cosmetics associate mostly with a refreshing feel. However, autumn and winter are just as important for brightening care if you want to avoid rebound pigmentation. Go on with it to enjoy bright skin in spring!

When you are exposed to the sun on long runs, or spend time in the dry open air, your skin gets damaged. That’s why after-run skincare plays a crucial role.

Especially when it comes to UV rays, the generation of melanin, which is the cause of dark spots, starts in three days after sun exposure. Therefore, it’s essential to have concentrated brightening care within three days after a run. Another thing to keep in mind is enough moisturizing for skin prone to dryness. Introduce both moisturizing and brightening products into your autumn/winter after-run skincare regimen, and if you find it troublesome to use too many items, check out Shiseido’s brightening collection! You’ll find a lot of products that combine moisturizing and brightening effects and can be used in any season.
